Round-the-World Classic Car Rally Starts NorAm Route in Anchorage

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Classic cars that were manufactured long before Alaska became a state, such as a 1929 Bentley and a 1938 Packard, start the North America section of "The Around the World in Eighty Days Motor Challenge" in downtown Anchorage, Alaska. The race started May 1 at London Tower Bridge, crossed Europe and finished its first leg in China. On June 10, the cars were flown in huge cargo planes to Anchorage from Beijing. From downtown Anchorage the rally started its journey to New York on Monday, June 12 at 10 a.m. Most of the 42 cars that started the race were on the road long before Alaska became a state in 1959 including a 1940 Cadillac, 1942 Pontiac Chieftain Torpedo 6, 1955 Chevrolet 210 Sedan and a 1955 Jaguar XK 140 Sports.
