AutoNation sets its Sights on 60,000 Online Sales
8 June 2000
Detroit - Speaking in Detroit on Wednesday, AutoNation President, Michael Jackson, predicted that his company will sell approximately 60,000 vehicles via the Internet this year, accounting for about $1.7 billion in sales. Last year AN claimed sales of about $1 billion from online purchases. Although the projection represents a very optimistic growth rate, Mr. Jackson commented that by comparison to AutoNation's overall revenues, which is more than $20 billion, it is relatively small portion and very do-able. Mr. Jackson added that Internet car and truck buying ranks just after books and travel services, and is growing very quickly, in spite of its changing nature. He believes that middlemen referral services will eventually disappear, and that actual dealers who can fill orders from their inventories will be the ones to succeed. MJR
