AMA: Mladin lead Chevy Trucks Like a Rock Challenge
8 June 2000
PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- Yoshimura Suzuki ace Mat Mladin has taken an early lead in the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Chevy Trucks U.S. Superbike Championship Like A Rock Challenge. In fact, following his doubleheader sweep at last weekend's Big Kahuna races at Road Atlanta, Mladin is currently the only rider eligible for the loaded Chevy Silverado pickup truck, to be presented to the Like A Rock Challenge winner. Eligibility for the Like A Rock Challenge requires that a rider win at least one of the races at the three 2000 Chevy Trucks U.S. Superbike doubleheader rounds. Mladin, the defending Chevy Trucks Superbike champion, has won every 2000 Chevy Trucks U.S. Superbike Championship race to date. Mladin will be challenged by Honda's Nicky Hayden at this weekend's doubleheader at the Road America Coca-Cola Super Cycle Classic. Hayden took second-place in both legs of the Big Kahuna. If he can take a win at Road America this weekend, he'll be in the running for the Chevy Silverado. Other riders who appear to have strong chances include Kawasaki's Eric Bostrom, who took third place at race one of the Big Kahuna, and Mladin's Suzuki teammate, Aaron Yates, who took third at Big Kahuna race two. The Like A Rock Challenge was created by Chevy Trucks in recognition of the extreme demands a doubleheader race weekend places on riders and teams. As the manufacturer of the most dependable, longest-lasting trucks on the road, Chevy Trucks has created a reward for the rider who demonstrates that he's the longest-lasting, and most dependable throughout the three doubleheader race weekends Format: The Chevy Trucks Like A Rock Challenge takes place at 2000 AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Superbike Championship doubleheader rounds, to be held June 2-4 at Road Atlanta, in Braselton, Ga.; June 9-11 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis.; and July 14-16 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. Rules / Eligibility: To be eligible for the Chevy Trucks Like A Rock Challenge, a rider competing in the AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Superbike Championship must win at least one of the six races comprising the three doubleheader rounds. Points are paid down 10 places. The Like A Rock Challenge points are separate from AMA championship points, and do not affect regular championship standings in any way. The rider who accumulates the most Like A Rock Challenge points, and has won at least one of the six doubleheader races, will be awarded a new Chevy Silverado pickup truck valued at $32,000. Since its introduction, the Chevy Silverado has won 25 major automotive awards, including the J.D. Power Appeal Award, confirming its status as the benchmark in pickup trucks. In the event of a tie, the tie will be broken based on the number of wins in the Like A Rock Challenge. If that does not break the tie, the number of second-place finishes in the Like A Rock Challenge will be compared, then thirds, fourths, etc., until the tie is broken. If a tie remains, the best finish of the last race will determine the winner.
