AMA: Heartland park raceway to challenge top-riders
8 June 2000
PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The racers of the AMA Progressive Insurance U.S. Flat Track Championships will take to the newly redesigned short track at Heartland Park Raceway June 10 for round three of the AMA Progressive Insurance U.S. Flat Track Championships. In upgrading the races from AMA Hot Shoe Nationals to Progressive Insurance Grand National status, officials at Heartland Park Raceway have made major changes to the track configuration. The track's long straights and tight, short-radius turns have been re-configured, said AMA Pro Racing Dirt Track manager Bruce Bober. "The straights have been shortened, and the radius of the turns has been increased, making a much more motorcycle-friendly oval," Bober said. With the newly designed track, the advantage goes to short-track specialists, like 2000 Daytona short-track winner Terry Poovey, of Euless, Tex. But competitor Brett Landes could give Poovey a run for the money. Landes, of Los Gatos, Calif., is no stranger to short-track success and has placed on the podium at Daytona in six of eight attempts, winning that event in 1995. In the Harley-Davidson Sportster Performance Series, 1999 champion Willie McCoy may be able to put some distance in the points battle between himself and his nearest rivals. Current points leader Paul Morgan III is not slated to attend. Also absent will be series third-place rider, Roger Lee Hayden, who will be fulfilling his road-racing duties at Road America. Qualifying heats begin at 5p.m. with opening ceremonies at 6:30p.m. For ticket information, call (785) 862-4781. 2000 AMA PROGRESSIVE INSURANCE U.S. FLAT TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP POINT STANDINGS POS PTS NUM RIDER, HOMETOWN MACH 1 38 9 JAY SPRINGSTEEN, LAPEER, MI ROT/HD 2 35 18 TERRY POOVEY, EULESS, TX ROT/HON 3 33 1 CHRIS CARR, FLEETWOOD, PA ROT/HD 4 25 21 WILLIAM DAVIS, GOLDSBORO, NC ATK/HD 5 23 43 JOE J KOPP, MICA, WA ROT/HD 6 21 33 GLEN JR SCHNABEL, WEST BEND, WI WR/HD 7 21 11 BRYAN BIGELOW, AU GRES, MI ROT/HD 8 21 31 KEN COOLBETH JR, WARREN, CT WR/HD 9 16 80 RICH KING, DYSART, IA HD 10 16 41 BRETT LANDES, LOS GATOS, CA ATK/HD 11 15 67 MIKE HACKER, PRINCE GEORGE, VA HD 12 15 59 WILLIE MCCOY, RICHARDSON, TX ATK/HD 13 14 69 NICKY HAYDEN, OWENSBORO, KY HD 14 13 10 DAN STANLEY, BELLINGHAM, WA ATK/HD 15 9 53 GARY ROGERS, SAN JOSE, CA HD 16 8 24 MICHAEL VARNES, READING, PA HD 17 7 81A ROY MILLER, NEW HOLLAND, PA ROT 18 6 26 STEPHEN J BEATTIE, CANADA, ON ATK/HD 19 5 12N JASON M TYER, IRVING, TX HD 20 5 19 PAUL LYNCH, BEL AIR, MD HD 2000 AMA HARLEY-DAVIDSON PERFORMANCE SERIES POINT STANDINGS POS.
