Goodyear Elects New Director

    AKRON, Ohio - Edward T. Fogarty, former chairman, president and chief 
executive officer of Tambrands, Inc., has been elected to the board of directors
of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.  His election increases the number of 
Goodyear directors to 12.

    "Mr. Fogarty brings more than 30 years of experience in the consumer
products industry, both in the United States and internationally.  His
insights will be valuable as Goodyear expands its retail business and moves
closer to our customers," said Samir G. Gibara, chairman, chief executive
officer and president.

    Fogarty, 62, served Tambrands as its president and chief executive officer
from 1994-1997.  He was elected chairman in 1996.

    Prior to joining Tambrands, Fogarty was president of the Colgate-Palmolive
Company's Colgate U.S./Canada/Puerto Rico business from 1989 to 1994, senior
vice president and general manager of the consumer products division of
Corning Inc., from 1983 to 1989.

    From 1980 to 1983, he was president of the Playtex International division
of Esmark Inc.  Fogarty was vice president and general manager of Bristol-
Myers Company's Clairol hair coloring and toiletries division from 1976-1980.
His career also includes previous management and marketing positions with
Esmark and Colgate-Palmolive.

    Currently, he serves on the board of directors of Avon Products Inc. and
UST Inc.

    Fogarty earned bachelor of arts and master of business administration
degrees from Harvard University.
