CASCAR: Turner wins second straight

5 June 2000

HAMILTON, ON - Al Turner earned his second CASCAR Castrol Super Series East
checkered flag in as many events, on Sunday afternoon at Cayuga Speedway.
Turner, who hails from Barrie, ON has exploded from the starting gate in
his quest for a CASCAR championship.

The Blue Streak Intrepid driver came from the 13th starting position - in
the field of 38 starters - and took the lead with 27 laps remaining in the
250 lap event. From there, he held off a determined charge by defending
National champion Peter Gibbons to win by a fifth of a second in the Ford
Quality Care 250.

Gibbons, driving the Canadian Tire Chevrolet, led for the first 134 laps
but a pitting miscue knocked him to the tail end of the lead lap. The
Stouffville, ON racer quickly recovered through the field but ran out of
laps in his quest for the lead.

Finishing third was Robin Buck. It was the best career oval finish for the
former oval racer who drives the UAP NAPA Pontiac Grand Prix.

Race Notes: During qualifying for the Ford Quality Care 250, heat wins went
to Al Turner, Scott Steckly and Neil Fair. Pete Vanderwyst won the Fast
Qualifiers' heat, while Jim Lapcevich claimed the Final Qualifiers' race.
Peter Gibbons' pole winning speed of 106.838 mph on the 5/8-mile oval beat
Steve Robblee's former mark of 103.135 which had stood since 1991. In all,
22 drivers either tied or beat Robblee's old record.

Next event: The CASCAR Castrol Super Series East resumes Saturday, June 10
at Autodrome St-Eustache, near Montreal, QC.
