CASCAR: Shirley wins in front of hometown fans
5 June 2000
SASKATOON, SK - The CASCAR Castrol Super Series West kicked off its 2000 racing season at Saskatoon's Bridge City Speedway on Saturday night. Hometown favourite Dan Shirley satisfied the capacity crowd with a victory in the Auto Clearing Chrysler Superstore 150 on the 1/3-mile oval. During time trials for the event, Shirley's Chevrolet Monte Carlo obliterated the track record with a smoking lap of 15.982 seconds. It was the first time a Super Series West competitor had notched a sub-16 second lap during qualifying. Following an inversion of the top six qualifiers for the start of the race, Shirley methodically worked his way through the field until taking the top spot from polesitter Steve Jefferson on lap 101 of the 150 lap race. He led the rest of the way to take the checkered flag in front of his many fans. Finishing second in the season opener was Edmonton, AB native and second-generation racer Daryl Harr. The John Deere Chevrolet Monte Carlo driver started third in the 19-car field. The final podium position went to defending Western series champion Jefferson, in his DaimlerChrysler / Sandman Inns Intrepid.
