Tracks: Varin is Modified winner at Fonda

Mayne, Tanner, Catanzano, Ackerknecht, Horning and Stone also take checkersFonda, NY- Bobby Varin of Sharon Springs, NY survived early race cautions, took the lead on lap four from John Marsh and went on to record his 8th career win at Fonda Speedway on Curtis Lumber night. Varin is the sixth different modified winner at Fonda this season.
"I thought someone tagged me with three to go, but I didn't know who it was," said Varin in victory lane. It turned out to be a lap car.
Three first time winners took center stage at Fonda on Saturday. Tim Mayne led the 20-lap sportsman main event from green to checker for his first ever win at the track. Bubba Tanner of Pittsfield, Mass posted his first ever win at the track in the pro stock feature.
Street Stock "A" action saw Keith Ackerknecht pick up his first career win by grabbing the lead on the first lap and holding off Dick Nichols for the win.
The Street Stock "B" feature winner, Dave Horning, Jr. lead from green to checker for his third win on the season.
George Catanzano of Ghent, NY picked up the checker for the third time in the I.M.C.A. Modifieds
The second annual, Bev Caputo Pro Stock Dash for Cash winner was Nick Stone of Pattersonville, NY. Stone was given a handmade quilt and $100 dollars for his win in the 10-lap dash event.
Four Cylinder Demo action ended with former Street Stock runner, Kenny Hollenbeck as the winner.
The first four laps of the modified feature saw five yellow flags before the field settled down to green flag racing. Three of the top four in points were sidelined with only A. J. Romano returning a few laps down.
With the field in race mode, Bobby Varin quickly pulled away after taking the lead, challenged only by Ronnie Holmes on lap 23, when Varin got sandwiched between two lap cars and Holmes was able to move in.
The last five laps of the event saw Varin maneuver his way through lap traffic to record the win. Ronnie Holmes, Jack Johnson, Frank Hoard and John Marsh followed him. Marsh was later disqualified for being light. This brought the No. 3 of Craig Criscone to fifth.
Modified heat wins went to Bobby Varin, Tony Pepicelli, and Ron Holmes. Dave Lape was the consolation winner.
The sportsman feature saw only one yellow but the racing was strong throughout the 28-car field. Tim Mayne took the lead at the green and held on for his first ever win at the track. Mayne was followed by last week's winner, Ray Zemken, who grabbed second on the final lap, Jeremiah Munson, Mike Ballestero and Drew Fallis for the top five.
Sportsman heat winners were Jim Davis, Jeff Jones, Mike Ballestero and Rich Wozniak with the consi win going to Kevin Duryea
Joe Duncan led the field to the green in pro stock action. Duncan held the lead for one lap when Nick Stone took over. Stone fought off the challenges of Brian Jordan and Duncan until the halfway point.
Eventual winner, Bubba Tanner took the lead on the restart on lap 10. Tanner was challenged by point's leader, Ken Gates for only two laps, when Chris Morris made his move to sit second.
The top three remained, Tanner, Morris, Gates followed by Jeff Patrick and Rob Noviczski to round out the top five.
