Advance Auto Parts Reports Record Q1 Results
2 June 2000
ROANOKE, Va. - Advance Auto Parts today announced its first quarter 2000 results. Advance recorded record sales and record operating income in the sixteen-week period ended April 22, 2000 due to continued growth in both "do-it-yourself" and "do-it-for-me" segments and the realization of benefits from the Western Auto acquisition. Sales for the quarter ended April 22, 2000 were $677.6 million compared to the $670.5 reported last year. Retail sales, which rose by 6.4% from $587.5 million to $625.1 million, were partially offset by sales declines in the wholesale business. Comparable store sales increased by 4.4% for the sixteen weeks over a strong 13.9% comparable store sales increase in the same period last year. Both the do-it-yourself and do-it-for-me business showed continued sales growth. Operating income was $19.2 million in the first quarter of 2000 as compared to a loss of $17.0 million in the first quarter last year. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) was $38.8 million in the first quarter of 2000 compared to $17.7 million as adjusted for integration expense in 1999. This increase resulted primarily from the continued growth in retail sales and the improved gross margins achieved as a result of the Western Auto acquisition. The first quarter of 2000 was the first full reporting period after the completion of the Western Auto conversion and integration. Larry Castellani, Chief Executive Officer, said "We are pleased that as a result of all our people's efforts, we were able to achieve the sales and profit growth that was planned, and look forward to continued increases in both sales and profits." During the quarter, the Company opened 45 new stores in existing markets. Advance Auto Parts is the primary trade name for Advance Stores Company, Incorporated, a wholly owned subsidiary of Advance Holding Corporation. Advance ended the first quarter with 1,648 stores in 38 states, primarily located in the eastern and midwestern regions of the United States, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The company is based in Roanoke, Va., and is the second largest auto parts chain in the nation.
