Nissan Reports May Sales

Nissan Division Posts 10% Sales Increase
    CARSON, Calif., June 1 Despite analyst predictions that
last month would see a softening of US car sales, the Nissan Division of
Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA) posted May sales of 60,749 units, a 10
percent increase versus last year.  Bolstered by strong sales of Xterra, which
set an all time record with 9,000 units sold, the increase was also fueled by
record breaking light truck sales for May of 29,465 units, a 56% increase over
last year.  Combined sales in May for both Nissan and Infiniti Divisions
totaled 67,701 units, an 11.5 percent increase versus last year.
   Although several automotive manufacturers have announced new incentive
programs, Nissan Division reported a decreases of 51 percent versus last year
in its per unit C&I costs.

    Other sales highlights include:

    --  The fourth consecutive month of Sentra sales increases coincides with
        the launch of the new model.  In May, Sentra posted sales of 7,417
        units, an 18 percent increase versus last year.
    --  Pathfinder sales of 6,163 units were up 7.5 percent over last year
    --  Frontier continues its strong sales with 9,742 units, an increase of
        24 percent versus last year
    --  Altima reported sales of 13,256 units, a 2 percent increase over last
        month.
    --  Quest reported sales of 4,560 units, a 29.5 percent increase over last
        month.
    --  Maxima posted sales of 10,606, a 4 percent increase versus last month.
