Toyota Reports May Sales

2 June 2000

Toyota Announces Best-Ever Sales Month in 43 Years of Business in the U.S.
TORRANCE, Calif., June 1 Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A.,
Inc., today recorded its strongest month ever with May sales totaling 152,375
vehicles, an increase of 2.7 percent over last year's record-breaking May.
"Consumers have been stirred, not shaken, by rising interest rates and
volatile drops in the stock market, their confidence is as strong as ever,"
said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president. "On the other hand, the sharp
drop in new-home sales may indicate a new note of consumer caution in major
purchase decisions."
The Toyota Division had its best sales month on record with 135,460 units,
an increase of 4.6 percent over last year and eclipsing the previous high of
129,576 units set in July, 1986. Best-ever monthly sales were recorded by
Toyota passenger car and Lexus light truck segments, up 7.5 percent and
14.0 percent, respectively.
Toyota's line of redesigned vehicles fueled the Toyota Division's record-
breaking month for passenger cars. The Avalon full-size sedan enjoyed best-
ever May sales with 9,608 units, an increase of 65.7 percent over last year.
The Celica sport coupe and all-new MR2 Spyder posted strong sales of 5,308 and
974 units, respectively. The ECHO subcompact continues its steady sales
momentum with 4,307 units sold.
The popular Sienna minivan and Tundra full-size pickup fueled Toyota light
truck sales, recording best-ever sales months with 10,031 and 9,016 units
sold, respectively.
The popular Lexus RX 300 sport utility vehicle continues to soar, with
all-time best-ever May sales of 8,390 units sold, an increase of 20.5 percent
over last year.
Sales of North American-built vehicles accounted for 64.1 percent of total
April sales. There were 26 selling days in May compared to 25 last year.
