Volkswagen Sales Up 11.3 Percent - Best May Since 1973 - Best Jetta and Passat May EverAUBURN HILLS, Mich., June 1 Volkswagen of America, Inc. today reported its best May sales in 27 years and best month overall since 1979. In May, Volkswagen sold 33,074 new cars in the U.S., which represents an 11.3 percent increase over last year's mark of 29,704. Not since 1973 has Volkswagen enjoyed May sales of this magnitude. For the year, Volkswagen is well ahead of last year's brisk pace. Year- to-date, the German automaker has sold 146,241 new cars in the U.S., up 22 percent from the same period in 1999 when sales were 119,855. May represented another milestone for Volkswagen's best-selling Jetta model, which enjoyed sales of 13,156 versus 1999's mark of 12,245, an increase of 7.4 percent. It marks the best May in the model's 20-year sales history. Volkswagen's award-winning Passat sedan and wagon recorded its best May and second-best month overall with sales of 8,186, an increase of 19.3 percent over last year's 6,861. Volkswagen's popular New Beetle also broke a May sales record with a total of 7,320, up 3.5 percent from last year's mark of 7,071. Summer sales of the German automaker's convertible offering, the Volkswagen Cabrio, are off to a hot start. With sales of 1,612, the Cabrio posted a May record, representing an increase of 23.8 percent from 1999's figure of 1,302.
