Standard MEMS, Inc Joins the Center for Advanced Fiber Optic Applications

BURLINGTON, Mass. and SOUTHBRIDGE, Mass.--May 24, 2000--The Center for Advanced Fiberoptic Applications (CAFA) is proud to announce its newest member Standard MEMS, Inc. The induction ceremony will be held on June 16th at 9 AM in the CAFA offices, 50 Optical Drive, Southbridge Business Center, Southbridge, Massachusetts.
Standard MEMS is the largest independent volume manufacturer of Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) for high technology markets. Standard MEMS is the first fully integrated MEMS company that provides product design, MEMS microfabrication, end product packaging and systems integration for markets such as automotive, aerospace, biomedical, telecommunications, and information peripherals.
Nicholas Ortyl, Standard MEMS President and CEO said, "We are extremely pleased to have the opportunity to join and work with the Center for Advanced Fiber Optic Applications (CAFA). CAFA represents the best of what an industry led consortium is all about, namely aiding the advancement of technology by providing unique, high-tech facilities for its members to conduct sophisticated product development. Furthermore, we are excited about the recent opening of our Standard MEMS Microphotonics Design Center co-located with CAFA in the Southbridge Business Center at 80 Optical Drive. Over the next year, we look forward to developing a close working relationship with CAFA to enhance microphotonic technology as MEMS begins to play a more prominent role in the 21st Century."
CAFA's Executive Director, Dr. Martin Drexhage said "We are delighted and honored to have Standard MEMS as the newest member of CAFA. Microphotonics and related Micro Electro Mechanical systems technologies represent the leading edge of the revolution in telecommunications and optical networking". Drexhage went on to say, "that Standard MEMS recognizes CAFA for having the latest in photonic test equipment and for maintaining first class facilities in which to conduct very precise experiments".
Olen Bielski, CAFA's Director of Business Development added "that CAFA acted as a magnet to bring Standard MEMS to Southbridge and to create new jobs. Initially Standard MEMS will employ 8 engineering and technical people and I expect them to double in size within 8 months time".
Dr. William Tasker, Standard MEMS, Inc. Manager of Microphotonics, added "Our technical photonics group is growing rapidly and working on an assortment of photonic products that range from state of the art telecommunication devices to the latest in biomedical systems. We are excited about being a contributing member of CAFA, continuing to push the technical envelope with the invention and integration of MEMS and photonics, and furthering the development of MEMS and photonics in the Southbridge area."

    About CAFA

CAFA is a non-profit, public-private-university partnership, created to meet the product development needs of both manufacturers and end-users of photonic technologies. The not-for-profit framework was chosen to give participants, prospective funders and customers an unbiased, independent, industry-led forum for enabling technology development. As a "consortium of competitors", the Center focuses the engineering and scientific strengths of the region on unique, high-performance solutions to problems in healthcare, analytical instrumentation, environmental monitoring, communications, process control, and display technology. The Center's mission is to rapidly transform ideas generated by an alliance of business, government, and academia into commercially viable products. Its aim is to expand the marketplace through the development of advanced photonic products, processes and applications for manufacture by CAFA participants or new corporate entities spawned by the Center, and thus spur the growth of this important high technology industry sector regionally and nationally.
