Two Directors Re-Elected to Group 1 Automotive Board
          Hollingsworth, Howard to Serve Additional Three-Year Terms

    HOUSTON, May 25 Group 1 Automotive, Inc. , a
leading operator in the automotive retailing industry, announced the
re-election of two directors for three-year terms.  The election was held at
the company's annual shareholder meeting.
    B.B. Hollingsworth Jr., 58, Group 1's chairman, president and chief
executive officer, has served as chairman since March 1997, and as president,
chief executive officer and director since August 1996.  Previously,
Hollingsworth spent 19 years with Service Corporation International, the
world's largest death care provider, where he served as president and director
for over 10 years.  After leaving Service Corporation in 1986, he was a
shareholder and director of Foyt Motors, Inc., which was acquired by Group 1
in 1997.  Hollingsworth has served as a director of several public and private
companies.
    Robert E. Howard II, 53, has served as a director of Group 1 since April
1997 and has been president of Howard Group since its acquisition in November
1997.  In addition to his more than 28 years of automotive retailing
experience, Howard serves as a commissioner of the Oklahoma Motor Vehicle
Commission and as a director of the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Automotive
Dealers Association.
