PLYMOUTH, Mich., May 22 Johnson Controls - a
leading global manufacturer of automotive interiors - has been named a 1999
Supplier of the Year by General Motors Corp. This is the fifth consecutive
time the company has been honored with the award.
The prestigious international award -- which was presented last week at
the historic PrinzRegenten Theater in Munich, Germany -- is given annually to
GM's best global suppliers in recognition of their supplier performance during
the previous calendar year.
"Johnson Controls is one of our brightest and best suppliers," said Harold
R. Kutner, group vice president, Worldwide Purchasing and North American
Production Control & Logistics for General Motors, who hosted the event. "It
is an honor to have them working with us. Their contributions to General
Motors' overall success are immeasurable. We look upon the Supplier of the
Year award as an important recognition of their value as an automotive
industry supplier."
"It is a great honor to receive such a prestigious award from General
Motors," said Jeff Edwards, vice president and general manager of Johnson
Controls GM Business Unit. "This recognition is a testament to our global
employees' commitment to exceeding above and beyond our customer's
expectations in the areas of cost, quality, delivery, technology and
innovation."
In 1998, Johnson Controls was named General Motors' top worldwide
supplier. In gaining General Motors' prestigious "Corporation of the Year"
honor, Johnson Controls was cited for excellence in innovation, quality,
service, technology and price.
The GM Supplier of the Year award began as a global program in 1992. A
diverse team of executives from purchasing, engineering, manufacturing and
logistics selected the award winners based on their evaluations of supplier
performance in quality, service, technology and price. This year, General
Motors honored 181 suppliers from 22 countries for their excellence throughout
1999.
The automotive business of Johnson Controls -- which employs more than
65,000 people at 275 facilities worldwide -- achieved US$12.1 billion in sales
for the 1999 fiscal year. In model-year 2000, it will supply interior products
for more than 23 million vehicles.
