Fire at INTERMET German Foundry
23 May 2000
Fire at INTERMET German FoundryTROY, Mich., May 22 INTERMET Corporation suffered a serious fire at its Neunkirchen, Germany, foundry at approximately 9:30 p.m. EDT on Friday, May 19, 2000. There were no injuries. The plant, which makes components for the European automotive industry, is expected to be shut down for seven to ten days. However, certain production equipment may not be operational for several months. While the cause of the fire is currently under investigation, apparently the fire was caused by a spark that ignited material which was being transported in the plant by a forklift truck. The subsequent blaze quickly spread to the building roof and to other areas of the plant. INTERMET believes it has adequate insurance to cover plant repair and the temporary loss of business.
