Delphi Earns GM 1999 Supplier of the Year AwardDelphi's airbag systems, steering wheels, wiring harnesses recognized for superior quality, service, price and technology MUNICH, Germany, May 22 Delphi Automotive Systems has earned General Motors Corp.'s 1999 Supplier of the Year recognition for airbag systems, steering wheels and wiring harnesses. GM presented Delphi with the awards during a ceremony here at the PrinzRegenten Theatre on Saturday. "Delphi is one of our best and brightest suppliers," said Harold R. Kutner, group vice president, GM Worldwide Purchasing and North American Production Control & Logistics. "It is an honor to have them working with us. Their contributions to General Motors' overall success are immeasurable. We look upon the Supplier of the Year award as an important recognition of their value as an automotive industry supplier." With its award, GM recognized Delphi's airbag systems and steering wheels manufactured at two Delphi facilities located in Matamoros, Mexico. Delphi RIMIR is receiving its first Supplier of the Year award for its airbags and Delphi Componentes Mecanicos de Matamoros (CMM) is receiving its fourth consecutive Supplier of the Year award for the steering wheels produced at the plant. Both RIMIR (1999) and CMM (2000) are recipients of the Shingo Prize for Manufacturing Excellence from Utah State University's College of Business. Established in 1988, the Shingo Prize is awarded annually to recognize companies that excel in the application of world-class practices and techniques to achieve superior customer satisfaction and business results. The award-winning wiring harnesses, featured on numerous GM vehicles built both in China and the United States, were produced by Delphi's facility in Shanghai, China. This is the third consecutive year that Delphi Shanghai has won the award. "Ultimately, we want to be recognized by our customers as their very best supplier," said J.T. Battenberg III, Delphi chairman, chief executive officer and president. "We're honored that GM has selected us for their highest supplier award, as it indicates we are moving in the right direction. We are going to continue to work hard to maintain this trust and exceed expectations." GM's Supplier of the Year award began in 1992. A global team of GM executives from purchasing, engineering, manufacturing and logistics selects award winners based on suppliers' quality, service, technology and price performance during 1999. This year, GM honored 181 suppliers from 22 countries with its highest recognition. Less than one percent of GM's total supply base (30,000-plus suppliers) was recognized, GM officials said. Multi-national Delphi Automotive Systems, with headquarters in Troy, Mich., USA, Paris, Tokyo and Sao Paulo, Brazil, is a world leader in transportation and mobile electronics components and systems technology. Delphi's three business sectors -- Dynamics & Propulsion; Safety, Thermal & Electrical Architecture; and Electronics & Mobile Communication -- provide comprehensive product solutions to complex customer needs.
