NASCAR/INDY 500: Gordon's double duty lures sponsorhip
21 May 2000
Robby Gordon's "Double Duty" Lures Turtle Wax & Burger King Indianapolis, IN. (May 20, 2000) Team Menard, Team Gordon and Robby Gordon announced Saturday that both Burger King and Turtle Wax have signed on as co-primary sponsors for Gordon's attempt to race in both the Indy 500 and NASCAR's Coca Cola 600 on May 28th. "Double Time" as Gordon has billed it, will officially begin today with pole qualifying at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Gordon is no stranger to attempting to run both races on the same day, a feat he attempted in 1997. Rains thwarted the Indy 500 on that Sunday to foil the double, but Gordon returned later in the week to race. Turtle Wax and Burger King join Johns Manville, a long-standing sponsor and supporter of Team Menard, in tackling the challenges of this year's Indy 500 with Robby Gordon and John Menard. "This is exactly the type of situation that makes our company take notice," said Bob Piche, Marketing Director for Turtle Wax and it's CD-2 brand of engine treatment products. "We are very pleased to be partners with Robby and John Menard in both the Indy 500 effort and the Coca Cola 600. Turtle Wax and CD-2 continue their effort to support the ironman of racing, Robby Gordon, by endorsing Robby in NASCAR, the Indy 500 and the Baja 1000. He's truly unique in his abilities to run these different type races." The addition of Burger King to the fold gives Gordon the opportunity to reach a "Whopper" of an audience, with over 8000 Burger King restaurants nationwide. " We have been watching and waiting for the right opportunity to join up with Robby. Memorial Day weekend, May 27-28, is one of the biggest weekends of the year for auto racing and the right time for us," said Ned Owens, Marketing Director for Burger King. "There are only a few drivers out there that have talent and the edge to try to attempt "The Double." Burger King's support of Robby in his effort reinforces our strong and competitive message to our entire franchise system as we compete in our own business of selling hamburgers," said Ralph Cimmarusti, owner of Cimm's Inc., one of Burger King's largest franchisees. Gordon will race a blazing blue Dallara with Turtle Wax, Burger King and Johns Manville endorsing the Team Menard entry in the 84th running of the Indianapolis 500. Later that evening in Charlotte, Gordon's NASCAR team, co-owned with John Menard and business manager Mike Held, will field a neon orange Burger King /Turtle Wax Ford Taurus to tackle the Coca Cola 600 under the lights at Charlotte Motor Speedway. "A racing team is only as good as its people and its sponsors" said Robby Gordon, who has claimed three top-five finishes in his previous five Indy 500 starts. "We are fortunate enough to have the best of both. The opportunity to participate in this year's Indy 500 was only because our partner John Menard and his team wanted it that way. While the ultimate outcome of last years' Indy 500 was a heartbreaker (Gordon ran out of fuel while taking the white flag), John Menard has told me that was one of his most memorable trips to Indy." Burger King Corporation and its franchisees operate more than 10,900 restaurants in all 50 states and 58 countries and international territories around the world, with more than 92% of BURGER KING restaurants owned and operated by independent franchisees. Since the company's founding in Miami in 1954, the BURGER KING brand has become recognized for great flame-broiled taste and HAVE IT YOUR WAY food customization.
