Delphi Humanware(TM) Engineering Software Earns 2000 Auto Interiors AwardHumanware(TM) Significantly Cuts Product Improvement & Development Time TROY, Mich., May 17 The nation's leading automotive interiors magazine has honored Delphi Automotive Systems for its innovative use of engineering software in vehicle design. Delphi's Humanware(TM) software was awarded first place in the production category by Auto Interiors magazine during the publication's 2000 Design & Technology Awards banquet, held at the Atheneum Suite Hotel in Detroit last night. Humanware is a knowledge-based, state-of-the-art engineering tool for the assessment of ergonomics, comfort and safety in vehicle interiors. This innovative software electronically assesses vehicle interior design. It has transformed a manual physical and functional ergonomics analysis into a digital enterprise that can be instantaneously accessed by Delphi engineers across the globe. While providing engineers a virtual environment to evaluate numerous design alternatives to develop the best interior packaging, Humanware also integrates with other analysis and CAD software through an easy-to-use interface. "Humanware has allowed us to significantly reduce lead time in the ergonomics evaluation process," said Barbara Sanders, director of Advanced Development. It also allows us to create new interior assessments for breakthrough products. Now we can respond more quickly to our customers' needs and they in turn can compete more aggressively in this consumer-driven market." Humanware is comprised of seven modules: * Packaging * Population Accommodation * Vision * Reach * Seat Contour Analysis * Clearance * Comfort/Safety "Humanware has tremendous potential to facilitate integration among various teams, as we did with power adjustable pedals for drivers of short stature," said Dr. Alicia Vertiz, who oversaw the development of Humanware. "We collaborated with safety engineers, human factors engineers, designers and customers in the design phase faster than ever before. Now we are working on a true virtual reality model to simulate the actual driving experience." Vertiz and her team of Delphi scientists spent more than one year capturing its assessment knowledge base and developing Humanware.
