California Emissions Data Added to Carfax.com Database
One Million Records Will Help Stop $10 Billion Lost to Odometer Fraud

FAIRFAX, Va., May 10 Carfax.com, the nation's leading
provider of vehicle history information, announces the addition of over 10
million odometer readings from California emission inspections to its national
database of over one billion vehicle records. These records include vehicles
that have passed or failed emissions inspections under California's stringent
BAR-97 standards and will uncover Gross Polluter vehicles. According to
California emissions standards, a Gross Polluter is considered to be the worst
polluting vehicle on the road, polluting as much as 18 times more than the
average vehicle which passes emissions inspections. In addition, when
combined with the other information in the Carfax database, these records will
help reveal odometer discrepancies. According to National Highway traffic
Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates, Americans lose approximately $10
billion each year to odometer fraud alone.
"Thank you so much," write Freddy and Christy Waller of California. "We
were going to purchase a 1997 Ford Expedition. The seller told us that the
vehicle had only 25,000 miles on it, which would still put it under factory
warranty. We carfaxed the VIN and found out that it actually had at least
65,000 miles on it! Carfax saved us a lot of money and heartache."
