Tatomotorsports Audi finishes 3rd at the Rim of the World SCCA Pro Rally

9 May 2000

Del Mar, Calif. – May 8, 2000 – George Plsek Jr and Renn Phillips took their
Tatomotorsports Audi Quattro to 3rd place finish at this weekends Rim of the
World SCCA Pro Rally.

The team battled with the Nations best rally teams, as well as the roughest
conditions to place 3rd overall and 2nd in the OPEN class. “This was an
extremely satisfying result for us”, said George Plsek Jr. “It is hard
enough just to finish, but to finish 3rd, I was ecstatic.”

The event was held just northeast of Los Angeles, the city of Palmdale and
the Angeles Crest forest. The conditions provide to be very challenging for
the competitors due the extremely rough roads, elevation changes, dust, heat
and shear drop offs on the side of the road. About 55 teams took part in the
event which got stated on Friday evening with a short spectator stage in
front of the host hotel before they headed up into the mountains.

George and Renn started the event 10th on the road, the mechanics discovered
a leak in the intercooler just before the start of the first stage, with no
time to fix the problem they decided to run the first leg of the event with
a very down powered car and fix the problem during the overnight halt.
“Running with less power might have proven to be the key to our success.
Friday stages were very challenging and hard on the equipment and being
forced to run a little slower probably saved us. I was able to run fast
enough to stay in touch with the front-runners and finish the first leg in
6th place with four of the six being separated by about one minute,” said
George. The team was able to repair the faulty intercooler and continued
with the same strategy on Saturday. “The key was to run at the pace of the
guys in front of me and keep my eye on the guys behind me that were a
potential threat to over take us. I did not want to get caught up in the
battle for the fastest stage times with some of the guys further down in the
overall standing. We than picked up the pace for the last two stages as we
though that Toni Chavez was tied with us for 3rd,” said George.
