SCCA ProRally - Rim of the World Start Order
6 May 2000
53 cars, the event's largest field since 1994, are entered in the 17th running of the Rim of the World SCCA ProRally Championship event. All four Championship manufacturers (Hyundai, Toyota, Subaru and Mitsubishi) are represented, featuring the hugely successful Hyundai Tiburons, 4 Mitsubishi Lancers, and the debut of several new Subaru Imprezas. The two-day event will be held in the Angeles National Forest, on narrow trails that follow the mountain peaks along the San Andreas Fault. The Rally starts tomorrow. Selected late entries, news (driver/co-driver): · 1999 Production Class Driver Champion Karl Scheible & co-driver Russ Hughes; FIA Group N Class 1998 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo V - Karl had a rough time of it in April's Oregon Trail event, rolling his Evo halfway through the first day of competition. Expect to see Karl really pushing for an overall win to makeup lost championship points. · 2000 Alcan Winter Rally overall winner Paul Eklund & co-driver Scott Huhn; SCCA Open Class 1995 Subaru Impreza - One of several hard-luck stories at last month's Oregon Trail ProRally, shattering the gearbox close to the finish, Eklund arrives here with a new transmission and several more tweaks to his turbocharged engine. · Local favorite Lon Peterson and newcomer Jonathan Ryther debut a pair of 2000 Subaru Imprezas, each built to SCCA Open class specification - which means lots of horsepower. Peterson campaigned an indestructible 1979 vintage Plymouth Fire Arrow for many years in southern California, but is now looking seriously at a run for the national title in state of the art machinery. · The rally starts at the headquarters hotel at 6:30 PM with a Parc Expose, drivers will be on-hand for autographs, interviews and photos. At the 7:00PM start, each car will negotiate a special RallyCross stage at speed in a lot adjacent to the hotel giving everyone a chance to see the cars in action up close. · Comprehensive spectator information is now available on the Rim of the World Rally website. (see link below) this information will also be available at the headquarters hotel, in the press room. Stage times with about a 1 hour time delay will also be available at the site. · The weather for the event is expected to be much better than has been traditional, with warm mid-70's temperatures during the day, and mild 40's in the evenings. The good weather will be important, as the stewards reports indicate that the stage roads are the roughest they have been in several years. Attrition, particularly in SS 3, is expected to be high.
