NUMMI -- Car -- Receives J.D. Power and Associates North American Gold Plant Award for Initial Quality
FREMONT, Calif.--May 4, 2000--After collecting two Bronze Plant Awards and two Silver Plant Awards in previous years, New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI) finally struck gold.J.D. Power and Associates released its annual Initial Quality Study results today, and the Fremont, California auto manufacturer came in as the best car plant in North America for initial quality based on the responses from owners of the two vehicles it produces, the Toyota Corolla and Chevrolet Prizm. The Corolla was ranked best compact car in initial quality.
"This is a long-time dream come true," said Kanji Ishii, NUMMI President and CEO. "For our team members, this award is the consecration of many years of consistent efforts to build the best cars and trucks in North America, and there is no prouder day in our 15-year history," he said.
The J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study was one of the first leading customer satisfaction and product quality studies in the country and is considered a benchmark for the entire automobile industry. Based on customer feedback on the quality of their new automobile for the first three months of ownership, it has been adopted by NUMMI and many other auto makers as a point of reference to introduce dramatic quality improvements in the manufacturing process and product design over the years.
This gold plant award is NUMMI's fifth North American Plant Award. NUMMI previously received the silver plant award for second place in 1994 and 1999, and the bronze plant award for third place in 1995 and 1996.
