Exide Appoints James S. B. Chew as VP of Military Global Business Unit
READING, Pa., May 4 Exide Corporation (NYSE: EX), a global
leader in the lead-acid battery business and electric-energy-storage
solutions, announced today it has appointed James S. B. Chew, 38, as a vice
president, responsible for its military global business unit.
Chew will be responsible for sales and operations of Exide products for
military customers around the world. Providing stored energy solutions for
militaries is a substantial part of Exide's global business and includes, for
example, providing batteries for United States military vehicles.
Robert A. Lutz, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer at Exide,
said, "I have known James for many years now. He brings to Exide a unique
combination of experience, including military structure and contacts, coupled
with the marketing expertise of a consultant to the automotive industry."
Previous to accepting his appointment, Chew was Program Manager, Air and
Surface Weapons Technology, for the Office of Naval Research.
He also worked for more than 12 years as a product-marketing consultant to
the Dodge division of what is now DaimlerChrysler Corporation.
Prior to those assignments he was the director for the business development
office in the propulsion unit of Phillips Laboratory.
He has a Master of Science degree in systems management from the
University of Southern California and a Bachelor of Science degree in
mechanical engineering from California State Polytechnic University. He will
work from the company's corporate headquarters in Reading, PA.
As announced earlier this month, Exide has recently organized its
businesses into global units, cutting across geographic boundaries for a more
customer-focused approach.

Exide's other global business units and the executives who operate them
are:
    1. Emerging Technologies (electric storage solutions and new
technologies including innovative spiral wound and dual graphite):
Managed by David Smith, Vice President, New Technology; Ann Arbor,
        Michigan
    2. Transportation: Original Equipment (including batteries for cars,
trucks, off-road vehicles, agricultural and construction vehicles,
motorcycles, recreational boats and other similar applications):
Managed by Ronald Gardhouse, Executive Vice President, Transportation
        OE; Madrid, Spain
    3. Transportation: Aftermarket (automotive batteries for aftermarket
        channels)
    4. Managed by Bo Lindvall, Vice President, Aftermarket; Nol, Sweden
Standby (back-up power applications including stationary energy
        storage and telecommunications):
        Managed by Dr. Albrecht Leuschner, Executive Vice President, Standby;
        Budigen, Germany
    5. Motive Power (forklifts, electric vehicles and material handling
equipment): Managed by Neil Bright, Executive Vice President, Motive
        Power; Bolton, UK.

"James's addition completes our core group of executives managing global
business units. We have already seen positive business culture changes as a
result of this reorganization and we expect great things under James's
leadership of our military GBU," Lutz said.
Exide Corporation, with annual revenues of approximately $2.4 billion and
operations in 23 countries, is the world's largest manufacturer of automotive
and industrial lead-acid batteries and a leader in electric storage solutions.
