GM Vehicle Sales Up 2%; Light Trucks Set to Outsell Cars This Year* Total Vehicle Sales Rise 2% -- Retail Vehicle Sales Up 3% * Total Truck Sales Up 7% -- Retail Truck Sales Up 6% * Full-size Utility Sales Up 41% * Total Car Sales Down 3% -- Retail Car Sales Stable DETROIT, May 2 General Motors (NYSE: GM) announced today a two percent increase in vehicle sales to 426,618 units. GM truck sales forged ahead once again in April. Total truck sales rose seven percent to 213,099 units, the 10th consecutive monthly increase, while calendar-year-to-date truck sales are up 15 percent. In addition, for the calendar-year-to-date, GM has sold more trucks than ever before in its history. "The car-to-truck sales gap is closing rapidly and it looks like this year light trucks could outsell cars for the first time in industry history as well as GM history," said Bill Lovejoy, group vice president of North America Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing. "Trucks are what consumers want." The long-term trend of increasing light truck share continues. In 1999, light trucks were 48.7 percent of the industry, up from 41.6 percent five years ago. During the same time frame, GM's truck share has increased to 48%, up from 39.3 percent. In the first quarter of this year, trucks grabbed 49.2 percent of industry share, while GM truck sales were 49.5 percent of total GM light vehicle sales. April sales of GM's full-size utility vehicles climbed 41 percent, with GM's all-new utility vehicles leading the increase. Sales of the Chevrolet Tahoe surged 57 percent; the Chevrolet Suburban rose 17 percent; the GMC Yukon XL jumped 64 percent; and the GMC Yukon climbed 48 percent. In addition, Cadillac Escalade sales were up 32 percent. GM's van sales climbed to a record level in April, up 17 percent, and GM mid-size vans posted a 23 percent gain, marking the fourth consecutive record month for GM mid-size vans. Retail mid-size van sales rose 27 percent. Total car sales were down three percent and retail car sales were comparable to year-ago levels, rising 0.1 percent. However, total mid-size car sales rose eight percent, while retail sales of mid-size cars (a core segment for GM) rose 16 percent from last April. Several key GM vehicle brands in the industry-leading mid-size car segment continued to perform well. A record April for the Oldsmobile Alero highlighted continued strong performances by mid-size brands including the Pontiac Bonneville, and the Chevrolet Impala, Monte Carlo, and Malibu. Building on the momentum of its best first-quarter since 1992, the Cadillac DeVille continues a strong launch performance with sales up 58% in April from a year ago.
