Viking Freight Honored by Ryder for Achieving Highest Carrier Quality in Western Region

SAN JOSE, Calif.--May 2, 2000--Viking Freight Inc., the leading LTL (less-than-truckload) carrier providing Western regional transportation service and a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE:FDX), has been recognized by Miami-based Ryder System, Inc. with the 1999 Ryder Carrier Quality Award. Ryder, a world-class logistics and transportation management company, established this award to measure carrier metrics and reward those carriers that display outstanding performance.
This award is both unique and prestigious because Ryder's direct customers were invited to provide input during the selection process about their carrier preferences based on service quality. In addition, Ryder judged its LTL carriers by region in a variety of areas such as: transit performance, pricing value, claims performance, technology capabilities, billing accuracy, customer service, and innovative idea generation.
"Viking is proud to receive this coveted award for the Western region, and we look forward to continuing to deliver industry-leading service to Ryder's customers," said Viking's President and CEO Douglas G. Duncan. "To excel in our customers' eyes truly demonstrates the Viking commitment to always make our customers' needs and satisfaction our number-one priority."
"We are delighted to honor Viking Freight for providing our clients with exceptionally reliable, high-quality service," said Greg Bryan, general manager for the Ryder Transportation Management Group. "All of our carriers provide quality service. Those designated as top carriers in their respective categories for 1999 were chosen by a national selection committee based on `best in class' performance in on-time delivery, value, customer service and innovation."
Viking Freight transports nearly $4 million in freight each year for Ryder's customers, and provides a range of services including direct, inbound, outbound, and dock-drop distribution in the West. For example, Viking handles a sophisticated inbound returns program for Hewlett Packard and dock-drop distribution for Genie/Overhead Door.
As part of FedEx Corp. and its family of companies, Viking Freight Inc. is the leader in providing next-day Western regional freight service. Founded in 1966, the company is headquartered in San Jose, Calif. and has more than 5,000 employees. Viking provides services through a comprehensive network of 66 service centers in the eleven Western states, including Alaska and Hawaii. Known for its EZTDBW(R) (Easy-To-Do-Business-With) customer orientation, Viking is also consistently recognized for its industry-leading on-time delivery performance record. In 1999 the company's commitment to safety was honored with the American Trucking Associations' President's Trophy for its safety record. In addition to reliability and convenient e-commerce services, Viking offers shippers value-added services such as cross-border service to Canada and Mexico.
