Con-Way Canada Express Expands Operations to Five More Provinces
TORONTO--May 1, 2000--Con-Way Canada Express, Canada's newest national less-than-truckload commercial freight carrier, has announced it is expanding its operations into five more provinces as part of its overall plan to build a more comprehensive service network throughout Canada. For the past eight years, CON-WAY has operated in Canada as Con-Way Central Express and provided service to Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba. In January 2000, Con-Way Canada Express was established as an operating entity to meet the growing demand for LTL freight service within Canada and throughout North America.
Con-Way Canada Express, a Canadian-based subsidiary and operating unit of Con-Way Central Express (CCX), will now have 27 service locations in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Con-Way Canada Express will be managed from its new headquarters in Mississauga, Ontario.
"Canada's trade with the United States and Mexico, as well as within Canada is growing at a strong pace," said Richard Palazzo, president and chief executive officer of Con-Way Central Express. "That is why we have announced this five-province expansion. We saw the opportunity for Con-Way Canada Express to provide superior on-time LTL service to Canadian companies who need faster, more reliable transit times, between more direct points of delivery to markets throughout North America," he added.
The CON-WAY expansion in Canada will be the largest geographic move taken at one time since CON-WAY opened in 1983. The coverage of Canadian markets will increase from 65 percent to 86 percent of the country's population. It will also add an additional time zone, the Atlantic Time Zone, to CON-WAY's North American Operations. "We will be delivering customer freight over 800 miles further west to Alberta and eight hours further east to Prince Edward Island. Our east to west coverage within Canada will span over 2800 miles and we'll bring four-day delivery between the major urban areas at both ends," said Palazzo.
Steve Bilas, general manager of Con-Way Canada Express, said a key advantage for companies shipping within Canada is CON-WAY's unmatched on-time performance. "The big difference with CON-WAY is our ability to provide delivery service all the way from the Atlantic Provinces to Alberta.
"CON-WAY has strong ties to Canada," said Bilas. "Not only have we continually added to our service network and employee base in Canada during the past eight years, CON-WAY has all of its trucks built by Sterling Truck Ltd. in St. Thomas, ON. In fact, CON-WAY took delivery of the Sterling truck made in Canada when the plant opened in 1998. We took delivery of our 1,500th truck from Sterling on April 14th 0f this year," he added.
Con-Way Canada Express' expansion of its service network will include integration of its state-of-the-art service facilities with advanced internet technology so customers can track their shipments via the CON-WAY web site.
As part of CNF Inc., CON-WAY was named by FORTUNE Magazine in 1998 and in 1999 as the "Most Admired Trucking Company in America". This honor, based on FORTUNE's survey of 10,000 executives, included such measurements as quality of service, quality of management, financial performance, innovativeness, and social responsibility. Across North America, CON-WAY has built a reputation as the premier less-than-truckload contract freight carrier. CON-WAY's operating philosophy includes a firm "Safety First" policy, complemented by a skilled, flexible workforce that has given it a leadership position in the marketplace.
