Tracks: Donnie Corellis takes Modified Main at Lebanon Valley
30 April 2000
WEST LEBANON, NY- Donnie Corellis was victorious in the 30-lap modified main Saturday night at Lebanon Valley. George Marcus won the 20-lap sportsman feature. Rob Yetman picked up his first career street stock victory in their 20-lap feature. Steve Hough won the 12-lap IMCA modified feature. Sheldon's Oil Service and Ronnie's Cycles sponsored Saturday night's great racing action. Ronnie Blake took the lead on lap one of the modified feature, he would hold the top spot until lap 13. A lot of side by side racing through the pack in the early portions of the race. Rich Ricci, Ronnie Johnson and Kenny Tremont went three wide for eleventh on lap five with Tremont taking the advantage. The first caution of the race came on lap six when Hollis Morrisey and Maynard Forrette came together in turn four. The top five at this point was Blake, Corellis, Mike King, Jason Goff and J.R. Heffner. Dickie Larkin was strong early on, he grabbed fifth on lap ten. Ricci sat sixth by lap eleven. Blake began to feel the pressure from Corellis on lap 12 and Corellis would take the lead on the next lap. Disaster for J.R. Heffner on lap 14 as the suspension in the right rear collapsed. This allowed Larkin and Guy Sheldon to crack the top five. Larkin continued his drive to the front moving all the way up to second by the halfway point of the race. Tremont was hot on Larkin's trail by lap 16. John Lutes would spin and bring out the caution on lap 16. Right before the yellow had flown Dave Leckonby had slowed on the track. He went pitside under the yellow, but he would return. Larkin and Tremont battled hard for second on lap 17, but Larkin dropped from the race on that very same lap. Opening night winner, Matt Quinn started the race deep in the field. He had worked his way up to challenge Ricci for the fifth position by lap 18. Early race leader Blake broke going down the backstretch and made heavy contact with the turn three wall on lap 21. Corellis was able to pull away from Tremont on the lap 22 restart. Some great racing for the fourth spot between King, Sheldon and Ronnie Johnson. The last lap was exciting to say the least. As Corellis took the white flag he began to encounter lapped traffic, this allowed Tremont to close the gap. Corellis got trapped behind a lapped car going into turn three. Tremont tried to make the pass but Corellis was able to hang on for the victory. The lapped traffic allowed Ricci to pull even with Tremont as they crossed the line in a photo finish. After a review of the tape, it was determined that Tremont and Ricci had finished in a dead heat for the second position and both were awarded the spot. Mike King had an excellent run to finish fourth with Sheldon fifth. Lorne Browe took the early lead in the 20-lap sportsman feature. Browe's car broke loose going into turn one on the second lap causing the yellow flag to be thrown. Browe was able to correct it and continued on in second place. Browe was able to take the lead back on the restart. John Alberti and Hawley Smith battled for second on lap five. Wayne Jelley took second on a lap six restart with Sparky Lowe right behind him. The top five at the halfway point was Browe, Jelley, Lowe, George Marcus and K.C. Goewey. Jelley, Goewey and Lowe all got together going into turn one on lap eleven. Jelley was the only car not able to continue after the incident. Marcus began to challenge Browe for the top spot and made the pass on lap 12. Goewey took over second on lap 13. Once Marcus took the lead he opened a half straightaway over Goewey and cruised home for the victory. Goewey was second, Art Collins was third, Lowe fourth and Browe rounded out the top five Bob Duzlak took command at the drop of the green for the 20-lap street stock feature. Duzlak and Mike Halachick pulled away from the rest of the pack in the early going. The first of five cautions came out as Ricky Duzlak spun in turn two. Rob Speed used the restart to take over second from Halachick. Bob Duzlak would seek his chance at victory slip away as his right rear tire came off on lap eight giving the lead to Yetman. Al Blackburn used the caution to go pitside with a left rear flat tire. He would return but he would be one lap down. The top five at halfway was Yetman, Danny Sanchez, Dan Burl, Robbie Speed and Jim Lagenback. The third caution of the race came on lap eleven when Larry Race tagged the fourth turn wall. The caution came out a lap later as Nick Rogers slowed on the track. The restart was a thriller. Sanchez and Burl went three wide with Yetman for the lead going down the backstretch. Yetman was able to hold off their charge and continued to lead. Lagenback, Speed and Burl made contact on lap 16 with Burl sustaining heavy damage to his racecar, Speed would be finished for the night as well. No one could challenge Yetman for the front spot and he picked up his first career victory in the street stock division. He was followed across the line by Danny Sanchez, Todd Goldstein, Adam Haas and Halachick. Steve Hough led from start to finish in the 12-lap IMCA modified feature. Donnie Denue challenged Hough for the lead throughout the event, but he could never make the pass. Good racing for the third position between Kevin Huff, Brian Wilbur and Paul LaRochelle with Wilbur holding the spot at the end of the race. Huff and LaRochelle settled for fourth and fifth respectively. 4-29-00 SHELDON OIL SERVICES / RONNIE'S CYCLES MODIFIED SUMMARY (30 LAPS) - DONNIE CORELLIS, Rich Ricci Jr, Kenny Tremont Jr, Mike King, Guy Sheldon, Ronnie Johnson, Matt Quinn, John Hewitt, Chris Moore, Rob Pitcher, Jason Goff, David Sanchez, Chris Kokosa, Tim Dwyer, Dave Mosher, Lee Niznik, Jeremy Matthies, Skip Fox, J.R.
