AMA: AMA Dirt Track Grand Championships set for June 30-July 5 in Indiana
29 April 2000
PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- Nearly a century ago, the sport of motorcycling discovered oval-shaped dirt tracks -- originally designed for horse racing -- and one of motorsport's most compelling forms of racing was born. Over the decades, the uniquely American sport of motorcycle dirt-track racing has produced stars on the national level and launched the careers of numerous international champions. It all starts with the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) and its comprehensive programs of AMA Sports amateur and pro-am racing. For amateurs and aspiring pros, the top rung on that ladder is the AMA Dirt Track Grand Championships -- scheduled this year from June 30 to July 5. The 2000 AMA Dirt Track Grand Championships will mark the 24th consecutive year that the AMA has offered a summertime showdown for the best young dirt-track riders in the nation. The event will challenge a top field of racers on four distinct types of tracks at the Lawrenceburg (Indiana) Speedway and the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. Riders in 21 competition categories will compete on Short Track and TT Scrambles tracks in Lawrenceburg, before moving on to the high-speed Half-Mile at the state fairgrounds. The week of racing will culminate on the famed Indy Mile, with a racing doubleheader that includes the Grand Championships and a national event on the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) vintage circuit. Riders will accumulate points in the finals of each day of racing. And at week's end, AMA Grand Champions will be named in each class. In addition to youth and amateur classes for riders of all ages on machines from 50cc to 883cc in displacement, the 2000 AMA Grand Championships will feature purse-paying 250cc and 600cc Pro Sport classes for recent graduates of the amateur racing scene. The AMA Pro Sport Grand Championships will also feature a points-paying round of the AMA Pro Racing Hot Shoe Championship Series. But the single most important award of the week is the AMA Horizon Award, which is presented each year to an outstanding young rider whose most likely to succeed at the sport's next level. Approximately 1,300 entries are expected for the 24th Annual AMA Dirt Track Grand Championships and AHRMA Vintage National Indy Mile. Pre-entries for the Dirt Track Grand Championships close on June 5. AHRMA administers all vintage class entries directly. The AMA Dirt Track Grand Championships are a co-promotion of AMA Sports and Fast Track Racing of Columbia City, Ind., and are conducted under the rules and guidelines of AMA Sports.
