Cummins Named Founding Partner in President's Twenty-First Century Truck Initiative

    COLUMBUS, Ind.--April 21, 2000--Cummins Engine Company, Inc. (NYSE:CUM) today announced its participation in the Administration's "Twenty-First Century Truck Initiative". The partnership continues Cummins' mutually beneficial working relationship with the federal government to enhance the competitiveness of the U.S. truck and bus market worldwide while improving air quality and reducing American dependence on petroleum-based fuels.
    Under the initiative, Cummins and other industry partners will collaborate with the Departments of Defense, Energy, Transportation, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Office of Science and Technology Policy, the Council on Environmental Quality, the National Partnership for Reinventing Government, and the Office of Management and Budget. Cummins will work with these partners to develop a commercially viable truck and propulsion systems technology that will dramatically cut fuel use and emissions of medium and heavy trucks and buses while enhancing safety, affordability and performance.
