Tracks: 'Twin 40' mains for NASCAR Late Models on tap at Irwindale this weekend
19 April 2000
PLUS: SUPER STOCKS, MINI-STOCKS, USAC TQ MIDGETS & FIGURE 8 ACTION! Irwindale, Calif. - - Irwindale's hot NASCAR Late Model cars are about to get even hotter this coming Saturday, April 22. That's when they'll need to get it right not once but twice in the same night. "Twin 40's" means just that, two 40-lap main event-style features where full points are on the line in each event. Win or run really good in both and leap forward in those all important season championship points DNF (did not finish) or run really bad in both, and you might playing a tough game of catch-up for the rest of the season. Critical Every race is critical in the Late Model championship (won last year by a scant 2 points!). These back-to-back races will be a test of drivers and crews to see who produce a reliable car, drive it smart and fast, stay out of trouble, and finish both races. "Character-building" some might call it, one tough night of racing with a big points payoff is another way of putting it. And the protagonists are: The same four guys who ran so strong on opening night! Qualifying first, winning the searing eight lap trophy dash from the back row, and taking the main event money with a wire-to-wire win on April 8, young gun Todd Burns from Riverside, California extended his lead in the early season point battle by exactly double. Burns is batting 1000 at Irwindale Speedway in 2000 with identical fast time, dash, and feature wins in his two IS appearances so far. Also identical with the opening night results were the next three drivers in line behind Burns; James Weston (Goleta), Tony Green (Oak Hills), and Guy Goldstein (Cathedral City), only Simi Valley's Steve Nickolai changed the makeup of the March 25 Late Model first fivesome. Irwindale's NASCAR Super Stocks and Mini-Stocks (their first appearance in 2000) are also on the night's bill along with USAC TQ Midgets on the 1/3-Mile and Figure 8 racers on the criss-cross intersection (commonly knows as the corner of "Ohmygosh!" and "Looookout!"). Fans are urged to come out early (the ticket office opens at noon and grandstands open at 4:00 pm) to enjoy a free car club car show, live band, watch the qualifying races, and take their choice of the best seats from which to enjoy the races. Staying "late" nets fans an extra treat, a visit to the Pit Area and a chance to get photos, autographs, and an insider's close-up look at the teams and equipment that put the night's show on.
