                       Jacqueline F. Woods Joins Board

    CANTON, Ohio, April 18 At The Timken Company's
(NYSE: TKR) Annual Meeting of Shareholders today, Mrs. Jacqueline F. Woods was
elected to the board of directors for a three-year term expiring at the 2003
annual meeting. Mrs. Woods, 52, has served as president of Ameritech Ohio, a
subsidiary of SBC Communications Inc., since 1993.

    "Jacqueline is a proven leader who brings to our board a wealth of
knowledge about the fast-growing electronic communications industry," said W.
R. Timken, Jr., chairman and chief executive officer. "Her professional
experience makes her an invaluable addition to The Timken Company's board of
directors."
    Also at the annual meeting, Stanley C. Gault, John M. Timken, Jr. and W.
R. Timken, Jr. were re-elected as directors for three-year terms to expire at
the 2003 annual meeting.
    The remaining eight directors are as follows:

    James W. Griffith, John A. Luke, Jr., Ward J. Timken and Martin D. Walker,
whose terms expire at the 2001 annual meeting, and J. Clayburn La Force, Jr.,
Robert W. Mahoney, Jay A. Precourt and Joseph F. Toot, Jr., whose terms expire
at the 2002 annual meeting.
    Effective today, Alton W. Whitehouse retired from the company's board of
directors. Mr. Whitehouse, retired chairman and chief executive officer of The
Standard Oil Company in Cleveland, had been a director since 1986.

    At a meeting of the board after the shareholder meeting, the following

    Biographical Summary of Jacqueline F. Woods
    Mrs. Woods joined Ohio Bell (now Ameritech) in 1970 and served in various
leadership positions in customer service, public relations, public affairs and
marketing. After working in Chicago as vice president of finance and
administration and later as business marketing vice president at the Ameritech
Services unit, she returned to Ohio in 1993 to assume her current position.
    Active in corporate, cultural and civic affairs, Mrs. Woods chairs the
board of Cleveland's Great Lakes Science Center. She is a member of the Board
of several organizations, including the Cleveland Foundation, Anderson's Inc.,
Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University, the Ohio
Business Roundtable and the Greater Cleveland Chapter of the American Red
Cross. Recently appointed as a member of Governor Taft's Workforce Policy
Board, Mrs. Woods was inducted into the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame in 1998.
Mrs. Woods is a graduate of Ohio's Muskingum College.
