Omron Automotive Electronics Achieves Honda Excellence Award For Laser Radar TechnologyFARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., April 17 Omron Automotive Electronics has earned a 2000 Excellence Award for Development from Honda R&D Japan. Omron developed its laser radar adaptive cruise control technology for Honda's Intelligent Highway Cruise Control System (IHCCS). IHCCS currently is used on the Honda Avancier sold in Japan. A supplier to Honda for 20 years, Omron was honored for superior performance in three key performance areas: Quality, Cost and Development. This marks Omron's second consecutive Honda Excellence Award. The company also received a 1999 award for Quality Achievement. Omron's laser radar technology utilizes optics -- one of Omron's four core technologies -- to detect vehicles driving ahead. The miniaturized, lightweight system produces a scanning beam with distance accuracy up to 130 meters. If vehicle following distance becomes too close or if the vehicle speed changes, the system automatically applies light braking and alerts the driver. The system is capable of detecting multiple vehicles, different vehicle types, curved roads and false objects caused by elements such as fog and heavy rain. Omron Automotive Electronics designs and manufactures a range of advanced electronic and electromechanical components for manufacturers around the world. As part of a $5.6 billion corporation with strengths in fuzzy logic, optics, sensors and the 3C's ... controls, components and computers, Omron Automotive Electronics integrates these technologies into its electronic control components to help automakers achieve greater safety, comfort and convenience for today's drivers.
