Substantial Growth in Industrial Cleaners Shared in Fragmented Market; Car Wash Products Fare Well in Transportation Segment
LITTLE FALLS, N.J., April 17 Rapid gains in the car wash
business have paced robust growth in the market for cleaners and related
products sold to highway transportation, according to Bruce Boynick, senior
consultant with Kline & Company, Inc., a Little Falls, NJ-based management
consulting firm. Kline estimates that the highway transportation
market-including car washes, fleet, truck and bus washes, and vehicle
maintenance and repair-totals $1.3 billion.
These transportation markets are remarkably diffuse and fragmented because
they include detergents, presoaks, drying agents, waxes, solvents, hand
cleaners, concrete cleaners, and other specialties. A large cast of chemical
suppliers serves this largely entrepreneurial business. Significant suppliers
include Ecolab, Zep, Safety-Kleen, Turtle Wax, Gojo, Simoniz USA, and Cleaning
Systems Inc. (CSI).
Based on a survey of car washes, fleet washes, mobile operators, repair
shops, service stations, and auto dealerships nationwide, Kline & Company has
completed the third edition in its continuing program of syndicated reports on
the market for industrial and institutional (I&I) cleaners, FOOD PROCESSING
AND INDUSTRIAL CLEANING PRODUCTS USA, 1999. The report was issued with
separate chapters addressing other markets for cleaning products, including
food and metal processing, pulp and paper, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, and
aircraft cleaning. The report focuses on four significant and dynamic
business segments of the U.S. market: (1) food processing; (2) transportation
(highway and off-highway); (3) metal processing; and (4) pulp and paper
production. The study provides a comprehensive analysis of the following:

    -- End-use segments
    -- Products
    -- Suppliers
    -- Channels
    -- Important issues and trends

Kline & Company's current report, FOOD PROCESSING AND INDUSTRIAL CLEANING
PRODUCTS USA, 1999, addresses market size and segmentation, product
consumption, distribution channels, methods of cleaning, the role of
