USWA Names Bridgestone-Firestone as Negotiating Target

PITTSBURGH, April 7 The following was issued today by the
United Steelworkers of America:

The Rubber and Plastic Industry Conference (RPIC) of the United
Steelworkers of America (USWA) announced today that Bridgestone-Firestone was
selected as the target company in the year 2000 round of negotiations with the
tire industry.
The decision was made by the RPIC Policy Committee at a meeting in
Cincinnati, Ohio, according to USWA executive vice president John Sellers.
The union will make every effort to negotiate an agreement with
Bridgestone-Firestone that will establish a pattern with other tire and rubber
companies. A pattern agreement establishes wages and benefits across an
industry that provides a decent standard of living for workers and their
families, eliminating cutthroat competition among workers in the industry.
