CHESTER, Va.--April 5, 2000--Con-Way Southern Express (CSE), a less-than-truckload freight carrier for commercial and industrial businesses, will construct a new freight assembly center in Chester, VA. CSE is an operating component of Con-Way Transportation Services (CON-WAY) headquartered in Ann Arbor, MI.The company currently has a 34-door facility at 808 Holly Springs Avenue in Richmond, VA, which will be replaced, by a new facility at 11801 Old Stage Road, in Chester. Construction will be completed in November 2000.
"This new facility will not only provide better service to local Richmond and Chester businesses but also reduce transit times from two days to one day between major markets in North Carolina and northern markets in eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and all of Maryland and Delaware. We will now move customers' freight from Charlotte to Philadelphia overnight," said John T. Hickerson, president and chief executive officer of CSE. "We will have reduced transit times in 116 traffic lanes affecting 2.4 million 5-digit postal ZIP code combinations,' Hickerson added.
Company officials described the new facility as a key transfer point that will be utilized during the night for freight moving to thousands of cities along the mid-Atlantic seaboard. "Chester will be a lynchpin operation in our system which will contribute to the high service levels Con-Way Southern Express is known for and also improve transit times for our sister company Con-Way Central Express which serves midwest, northeast and mid-Atlantic states," said Hickerson.
CSE purchased 37 acres in Chester and will initially develop 27 acres with the remaining land slated for future development. Construction will include 38,220 square feet of space for 100 loading dock doors and capacity for 50 more. A maintenance shop and fueling area will occupy 22,132 square feet and 8,000 square feet of offices are also planned. When constructed, the new facility will have a daily freight-handling capacity of 2 million pounds.
