TRW Vigorously Denies Allegations of Toxic Emissions
CLEVELAND--April 5, 2000--TRW Inc. announced today that a lawsuit filed against the company in Maricopa County Superior Court alleging toxic emissions is unfounded and totally without merit. The suit filed against TRW Vehicle Safety Systems, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of TRW, alleges that emissions from its Queen Creek, Arizona plant caused health problems for residents living near the plant. TRW believes there is no valid scientific basis for these claims and it intends to mount a vigorous defense.
Extensive studies by governmental and other reputable organizations, including the National Institutes of Health, repeatedly have concluded that exposure to sodium azide or related combustion chemicals do not result in any long-term health effects. Exposures of residents to these emissions are all significantly below levels that raise any health concern.
These issues also have been reviewed thoroughly by the City of Mesa with the assistance of independent consultants. The City's findings concluded that releases from the TRW plant posed no threat to the public.
TRW has worked for several years hand-in-hand with cognizant government authorities on issues of emissions and has openly shared with such authorities all information and data on emissions.
TRW provides advanced technology products and services for the automotive, aerospace, and information systems markets. The company's news releases are available through TRW's corporate Web site (http://www.trw.com).
