Ford Motor Company is Exclusive Advertiser for the First Global Issue of TIME Magazine Honoring the Environment on 30th Anniversary of Earth Day

DETROIT, April 5 On the eve of the 30th anniversary of
Earth Day, Ford Motor Company has announced it will be the exclusive
advertiser for the first TIME magazine global special edition. The special
edition of TIME entitled "How to Save the Earth and the Heroes for the Planet
Who Are Making it Happen" will be on sale for one month beginning April 19.
Ford also will be the exclusive advertiser in two special issues of TIME
FOR KIDS. This marks the first global version of TIME FOR KIDS. It will be
inserted in the TIME special edition and it will recognize kid "Heroes for the
Planet" worldwide. A second special issue of TIME FOR KIDS, for distribution
in the U.S. to 2.8 million student subscribers in grades 2-6, will name the
nine American winners of the TIME FOR KIDS Environmental Challenge competition
to preserve a precious place.
"Ford Motor Company is very proud to be the exclusive sponsor of these
important issues of TIME and TIME FOR KIDS magazines," said James C. Schroer,
Ford Motor Company vice president of Global Marketing. "Ford has made a
pledge to provide ingenious environmental solutions that will position us as a
leader in the automotive industry of the 21st Century. Our actions, such as
making all of our trucks in the United States Low Emissions Vehicles,
demonstrate that we care about preserving the environment for future
generations. You can learn more about these actions via this unique
sponsorship of an important environmental effort."
A new corporate advertisement from Ford Motor Company will debut in the
April 19 issue of TIME. The campaign is designed to communicate to the world
some of the many environmental initiatives underway at Ford facilities around
the world. A representation of Ford Motor Company employees, dealers and
other environmental stewards are featured in the campaign.
"We have literally hundreds of men and women at Ford working tirelessly to
provide solutions to environmental challenges, and this campaign salutes their
efforts in a most effective way," Schroer said. "The fact that our company
founder put the world on wheels is well known. Perhaps less well known is the
ongoing dedication to both personal mobility and the environment that is a
mind-set still very much alive at Ford. The commitment is evident throughout
the Ford team -- from employees working on the factory floor to senior
corporate executives to the Board of Directors."
To draw further attention to the 30th anniversary of Earth Day, as well as
the ongoing importance of conserving the earth's natural resources, Ford Motor
Company also will host a special concert in San Francisco on April 15 honoring
the "Heroes for the Planet" saluted in TIME's April 19th issue, as well as
many heroes from around the globe who have been profiled in TIME and TIME FOR
KIDS since the series began in 1998. Hosted by Haley Joel Osment, the 12-
year-old actor who starred in "The Sixth Sense," the event will feature a
special appearance by Charlotte Church, the internationally acclaimed 14-year-
old Welsh soprano. Ms. Church will perform a concert and be accompanied by
the San Francisco Women's Philharmonic Orchestra.
In addition to the TIME heroes and Ford employees featured in Ford's
advertising campaign, about 2,500 environmental ambassadors ranging in ages
from 8-to-18 from the San Francisco area also will be in attendance for this
special concert. The A&E network will broadcast the concert on Saturday, May
20 at 7 p.m. EST.
Charles Alexander, editor of TIME's global special edition, said, "TIME's
decision to do a comprehensive global edition in advance of the first Earth
Day of a new century represents the greatest challenge of the new century.
Our special edition highlights solutions to environmental problems and honors
some of the individuals who are helping to put these solutions in place."
TIME's total readership worldwide exceeds 30 million. TIME's "Heroes for
the Planet" series has earned a "Designing a Sustainable World" Award from
Global Green USA, the American affiliate of Green Cross International, the
global conservation organization founded by former Soviet president Mikhail
Gorbachev. The award will be presented in New York on April 11.
Since signing on in 1998 as the exclusive advertiser for the "Heroes for
the Planet" series, Ford Motor Company has been the exclusive advertiser for
seven heroes reports in TIME; six special editions of TIME FOR KIDS, and three
websites: time.com/heroes , timeforkids.com/heroes and time.com/earthday .
To date, the "Heroes for the Planet" series in TIME has profiled
environmentalists working to preserve ocean life, rivers and other sources of
freshwater, wildlife and forests. The heroes also include environmental
designers, educators and people in business who pursue environmental
initiatives. TIME FOR KIDS has honored young people who work just as
passionately to enhance and preserve nature.
