Chrysler Group's Decade-Best Minivan Sales Strengthen U.S. Market LeadershipSurging Minivan and Car Performance Drive American Sales Record AUBURN HILLS, Mich., April 3 Record minivan and strong car sales propelled DaimlerChrysler Corporation to a new March sales record with a four percent increase in sales over 1999. Total March sales for Chrysler, Plymouth Jeep and Dodge in the U.S. were 260,707 compared to March 1999 sales of 250,010. Total minivan sales were 62,661, up five percent over previous year sales of 60,631, while car sales of 78,284 increased 12 percent over the same period in 1999. Truck sales also set a new monthly record with sales of 182,423. "This was the 10th record sales month in the last 15 months for DaimlerChrysler in the U.S. and an especially strong month for the Chrysler brand, which had a 50 percent increase over 1999," said Theodor R. Cunningham, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing. "We broke 16 sales records, including our best minivan sales month in a decade, and continued our record truck sales momentum. We also posted best ever March sales for Dodge Caravan, Dodge Dakota, Dodge Stratus, Chrysler Town & Country and Plymouth Prowler as well as impressive March sales increases for Jeep Wrangler, Intrepid, LHS, Cirrus, Breeze and Neon nameplates." Individual March sales highlights include: * Minivan sales were up five percent to 62,661. * Chrysler Town & Country recorded its highest sales month ever with sales of 12,259, a 61 percent increase over March 1999. * Dodge Stratus sales of 15,639 increased 154 percent over last year, making this the best month ever for Stratus. * Chrysler Cirrus sales were up 90 percent. * Dodge Neon sales were up 17 percent with sales of 12,061 vehicles. * Dodge Dakota sales were up 18 percent versus last year with sales of 18,213, representing Dakota's best month ever. * Jeep Wrangler set a new March sales record with 8,144, up 13 percent over last year. "With the continued strong sales of our minivans and trucks and a resurgent passenger car market, we are looking at one of our strongest sales years ever," Cunningham said. "And we can only see it getting stronger -- Dakota Quad Cab sales continue to show impressive growth each month, PT Cruiser is drawing unprecedented crowds to our showrooms and we have an all- new minivan on the horizon."
