GM Chairman Statement Regarding Retirement Of Executive Vice President Lou Hughes

DETROIT, April 3 The following statement is attributable
to General Motors Chairman John F. Smith, Jr., for use in
responding to media calls for comment regarding the retirement of GM Executive
Vice President Lou Hughes.

"Lou Hughes has been one of our most capable executives over the past 32
years. He has made significant contributions to the success of General
Motors, including his service as the executive vice president of the
corporation and president of our international operations from 1992 - 1998,
and most recently as a key liaison with our international business partners.
"His accomplishments have been strategically vital for GM, including the
negotiations for the ground-breaking joint ventures with Toyota (NUMMI),
Suzuki (CAMI), GM's expansion into eastern Europe, the establishment of
Europe's most productive assembly plant in Eisenach, Germany, and the creation
of new manufacturing facilities in Argentina, Brazil, China, Poland, and
Thailand. Lou played a significant role in the turnaround of GM Europe, where
he served as chief financial officer, managing director of Adam Opel AG and
ultimately as president of GME.
"He now has elected to retire from General Motors to pursue significant
and exciting opportunities with Lockheed. On behalf of the GM Board of
Directors and all of us at GM, I would like to thank Lou for all he has done
for GM and its stakeholders and wish him continued success in all his personal
and professional pursuits."
