GM Chairman Statement Regarding Retirement Of Executive Vice President Lou HughesDETROIT, April 3 The following statement is attributable to General Motors Chairman John F. Smith, Jr., for use in responding to media calls for comment regarding the retirement of GM Executive Vice President Lou Hughes. "Lou Hughes has been one of our most capable executives over the past 32 years. He has made significant contributions to the success of General Motors, including his service as the executive vice president of the corporation and president of our international operations from 1992 - 1998, and most recently as a key liaison with our international business partners. "His accomplishments have been strategically vital for GM, including the negotiations for the ground-breaking joint ventures with Toyota (NUMMI), Suzuki (CAMI), GM's expansion into eastern Europe, the establishment of Europe's most productive assembly plant in Eisenach, Germany, and the creation of new manufacturing facilities in Argentina, Brazil, China, Poland, and Thailand. Lou played a significant role in the turnaround of GM Europe, where he served as chief financial officer, managing director of Adam Opel AG and ultimately as president of GME. "He now has elected to retire from General Motors to pursue significant and exciting opportunities with Lockheed. On behalf of the GM Board of Directors and all of us at GM, I would like to thank Lou for all he has done for GM and its stakeholders and wish him continued success in all his personal and professional pursuits."
