GM Posts 8th Consecutive Month of Record Truck Sales

DETROIT, April 3 General Motors today reported
that its March truck sales rose 16 percent to 241,201 units, marking the
eighth straight month of record truck sales and the fourth straight month of
double-digit truck sales growth.
In addition to posting its best-ever March in full-size utility truck
sales, GM generated strong March results in each truck segment -- vans rose
28 percent; utilities were up 25 percent and pickups climbed 6 percent. March
was also the best month ever for total GM Trucks and Chevrolet Trucks. At the
retail level in March, trucks accounted for more than half of GM's vehicle
mix.
"We are determined to closely align our vehicle mix with consumer demand.
Trucks are a hot commodity and our products reflect the strength of our
assets," said Bill Lovejoy, group vice president of GM North America Vehicle,
Sales, Service and Marketing. "Our ultimate goal is to offer a mix of
vehicles that generates strong revenue and bottom-line growth and, most
importantly, a high degree of customer satisfaction."
While GM's March car sales declined 12 percent, first-quarter car sales
rose 3 percent to 643,789 units. Core mid-size car sales dipped in March, but
first-quarter mid-size car sales rose 11 percent to 367,057 units.
Cadillac DeVille, America's best-selling luxury car for the past 14 years,
rose 23 percent to 11,021 units marking the best March since 1994, and DeVille
had its best first-quarter since 1992.
Total GM vehicle sales were up 1.4 percent to 463,967 units in March.
First-Quarter 2000 Results
GM closed the first quarter with all-time records in all GM truck
segments. GM truck sales rose 20%. The company had its best quarter in total
pickup sales and the Chevrolet Silverado had its best quarter since 1978 --
the year GM became the only manufacturer to ever sell more than 1 million
full-size pickups. Fifteen of GM's 20 truck brands posted double-digit sales
gains, including pickups, vans and utilities -- no declines were posted in any
GM truck brand.
Total retail sales for the quarter rose 12 percent. Total vehicle sales
for the quarter increased 11 percent to 1,282,909 units. Retail truck sales
soared 18 percent and total truck sales were up 20 percent. Retail car sales
rose 5 percent and total car sales rose 3 percent.
GM's car sales leadership was fueled by an 11 percent increase in mid-size
car sales to 367,057 units for the quarter. Several of GM's core mid-size
cars performed well including the Chevrolet Monte Carlo, up 26 percent;
Chevrolet Malibu, up 12 percent; Oldsmobile Alero, up 11 percent; and Pontiac
Grand Prix, up 6 percent.
GM's 7 percent increase in the luxury segment was led by strong sales of
the all-new Cadillac DeVille, up 40 percent for the quarter.
