Mitsubishi Motors Reports Record First Quarter and Best-Ever March30% Rise in Volume for Best-Ever Quarter Driven by Galant, Montero Sport and Eclipse Sales CYPRESS, Calif., April 3 Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. (MMSA) today reported sales for first quarter 2000 and March that are the best in its corporate history, fueled by continued demand for its core products and showroom attention to newly arriving 2001 vehicles. Some figures of note for MMSA's best ever first quarter: -- 2000 year-to-date sales of 70,430 vehicles represents a 30% increase from first quarter 1999's 54,191 units -- MMSA sold a record 22,665 Galant mid-size sedans in first quarter 2000, up 74.4% from last year -- Montero Sport mid-size SUV, restyled for 2000 model year, reported its best-ever quarter, with sales of 16,015 units, up 43.8% from 1999's first quarter -- Eclipse sports coupe year-to-date sales rose 52.9% to 12,160 units March 2000 was the best-ever March for MMSA. Some figures of note: -- Overall sales were up 25.4% over March 1999 -- In its first month as a redesigned 2001 model, Eclipse Spyder sold 1,459 units, a 82.8% rise over March 1999 -- a strong pace in a seasonal segment -- Mirage Sedan sales of 3,162 units is a 65.7% increase over March 1999 -- Galant sales for March were 8,074 units which represents a 60.7% increase over March 1999 "The terrific first quarter reinforces that we are well on our way to meeting the 2000 sales goal of at least 280,000 units," said Pierre Gagnon, MMSA executive vice president and chief operating officer. "There's a lot of brand excitement with Mitsubishi, led by the strong launch of the Eclipse Spyder. We expect an equally strong launch of the completely redesigned Montero luxury SUV with the national advertising campaign breaking on April 23."
