ABC-7 'KGO-TV' Tackles The Bay Area Transportation Crisis

25 March 2000

One Hour Prime Time Special; Growth & Gridlock: The Search for Solutions

    SAN FRANCISCO--On March 30th, from 8-9 p.m., ABC-7 (KGO-TV) examines what Bay Area residents call their number one concern: the growing commute crunch.

    For decades, politicians have struggled to come up with a plan to end the gridlock and get Bay Area highways moving again. Billions of dollars have been spent on transportation, but the problem just keeps getting worse. How did we get into this mess and is there any way out? These are the issues up for discussion in a special broadcast forum, co-sponsored by the California State Automobile Association (CSAA).

    ABC-7 news anchors Dan Ashley and Jessica Aguirre will host this live, prime time event. An invited studio audience will have the opportunity to question the urban planners, transportation officials, community activists and political leaders who are shaping our future in transportation. Experts and stakeholders will offer their perspectives on transportation issues including congestion, mobility, livability and funding solutions.

    "During this time of unprecedented economic growth, we shouldn't sacrifice a good quality of life," said KGO General Manager Joe Ahern. "Now is the time to bring our communities together and search for transportation solutions that benefit the entire Bay Area. This hour-long program will be a good start."

    "AAA is pleased to sponsor and participate in this important program," added Jim Mollinelli, CSAA President and CEO. "Today's challenges require balanced transportation solutions -- solutions that can improve the quality of our environment as well as our mobility."

The panel of experts includes:
Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher; member of the House Transportation
     Committee;
Sunne Wright McPeak, President of the Bay Area Council;
Steve Heminger, Deputy Director of the Metropolitan Transportation
     Commission;
Stuart Cohen, Executive Director, Transportation Choices Forum;
Carl Anthony, Executive Director, Urban Habitat Program and;
Rose Guilbault, Vice President, AAA.
