Most Famous 20th Century Photos Showing Cars and American Culture Displayed At UCR/California Museum of Photography
RIVERSIDE, Calif.--March 20, 2000--Joint Exhibit -- Hot rods, muscle cars,
limos and convertibles. What memories do they evoke?
The Automobile Club of Southern California and the UCR/California Museum of Photography in a joint collaboration bring together some of the most famous photographs of the 20th Century looking at cars and American culture. The new exhibit, "Rear View Mirror: Automobile Images and American Identities," explores how Americans have defined themselves through automobiles and vice versa.
The exhibition will open on Saturday, April 8, and continue through Aug. 13, 2000, at one of the world's most foremost photography museums, UCR/California Museum of Photography in Riverside, Calif.
The 150 photographs in the show include photography pioneer Alfred Stieglitz's "Hand and Wheel," of Georgia O'Keeffe; Margaret Bourke-White's, "In the Time of the Louisville Flood 1937" and untitled aerial photographs of Los Angeles freeways by Ansel Adams. Ed Ruscha, photographer and landscape painter Edward Steichen, and the beat generation's Allen Ginsberg contribute works to this unique show. Actor Dennis Hopper also contributes a work of his own to the exhibit as well.
The exhibition will include additional works from the museum's photography collection, photos from the Automobile Club of Southern California's Corporate Archives (Karl Weber's Santa Monica Road Race, 1914), as well as images on loan from well-known photography and art institutions.
