Detroit Diesel Corporation Introduces New Fuel Economy Feature - PasSmart(TM)DETROIT, March 17 Detroit Diesel Corporation (DDC) will introduce a new feature for Series 60 powered trucks, named PasSmart(TM) (patent pending), during the Mid American Trucking Show. PasSmart is available as standard equipment on all recent Series 60 engines. The feature allows two maximum vehicle speeds to be programmed into the Series 60 engine. The lower of the two vehicle speeds is reachable at any time, as desired by the driver. The higher of the two vehicle speeds is available on a limited basis and is designed primarily for use when passing is required. The amount of time the higher speed is available, as well as the speed itself, is easily programmed by the owner of the vehicle. "With fuel prices at today's levels, PasSmart gives fleets the best of both worlds. They can select one speed that will provide good fuel economy and a second speed that drivers can use when passing is required on interstate highways. The vehicle owner can select up to a 20 mph difference in the two speeds and can make the higher speed available for any time period from 1 to 255 minutes. The vehicle can be operated continuously or intermittently at the higher speed until the time period is exhausted. The time period is automatically reset at an owner selected interval by the built-in clock in every recent Series 60 ECM." "For example, a fleet might select 63 mph as the speed desired for good fuel economy, and might also want to allow drivers 68 mph for brief periods of use on interstate highways when allowed by the posted speed limit," according to Tom Diefenbaker, Director, Electronic Products Business Development at DDC. PasSmart now permits them to do both. It's a great way to save fuel and keep drivers happy at the same time. PasSmart is available only on the Series 60 engine.
