DaimlerChrysler Traffic Software Helps Commuters Get to Work on TimeAUBURN HILLS, Mich. and STUTTGART, Germany, March 15 DaimlerChrysler researchers are developing the answer to the question that confronts urban commuters every day: Will I make it to work on time? The researchers have developed a trip planning service that is available to commuters online at the DaimlerChrysler web site via the Internet or by telephone. The service uses the commuter's individual departure point and destination, assesses up-to-the-minute traffic conditions and provides the best routes to the destination. The computer program is intermodal; that is, car, bus, train, plane, bicycle and pedestrian travel can be incorporated into the trip plan. The DaimlerChrysler software will be tested in the Stuttgart, Germany, area as part of the city's MOBILIST traffic management program beginning in the second half of 2000. The MOBILIST project, which includes DaimlerChrysler and 43 other partners, will be completed in 2003. By car and on foot, by train and bus, by plane and bicycle -- the DaimlerChrysler researchers' software compiles personalized itineraries to accommodate the wishes of the individual user. In the second half of 2000, this so-called "Intermodal Service" will commence pilot operation in the Stuttgart region.
