COSTA MESA, Calif.--March 13, 2000--Further increasing its penetration into the popular motor sports industry, Tickets.com Inc. announced that it was recently named the exclusive online ticket seller for California Speedway. The first event ticketed under the agreement, the NASCAR Winston Cup NAPA Auto Parts 500 (April 30), saw a record number of ticket sales. Speedway officials said one of the major factors in the sharp sales increase was its introduction of Tickets.com's online ticketing capabilities.
"We are off to a great start with our individual race ticket sales," said Scott Atherton, president of California Speedway. "Aiding our effort was the ability for fans to buy tickets through our online partner Tickets.com. I'm sure their easy-to-remember URL, www.tickets.com, played a major role in establishing a new first-day record."
"It is exciting to see race fans embrace the Internet as a preferred method for purchasing event tickets," said W. Thomas Gimple, co-chairman and chief executive officer of Tickets.com. "This success certainly illustrates the power the Web has in increasing race attendance, and providing an easier and more convenient consumer experience. We look forward to working with California Speedway to help them drive more ticket sales to auto racing events held at their track."
Tickets.com's recent string of successes in motor sports includes ticketing agreements with the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and the Indy Racing League's first event of the 2000 season, the Delphi Indy 200, as well as a three-year contract to sponsor the Galles ECR Indy Racing League car driven by Al Unser Jr.
