"Today we are introducing Pro-tec, Sono-tec, and Enviro-tec to help our
worldwide automotive manufacturer customers and the daily consumer of Lear
products better understand our focus on integration of safety, acoustic and
environmental technologies and to identify our strengths in providing
engineered solutions directly aimed at exceeding their expectations," said Ash
Galbreath, Lear Vice President - Advanced Engineering & Validation.
Lear offers an impressive line of innovative safety products designed to
meet the complete scope of customer needs. Lear's Pro-tec Occupant Protection
Systems include products and validation technologies in such areas as whiplash
protection, head impact protection, vehicle telematics, advanced restraints,
child safety, energy management, post-crash care, occupant sensing, cargo
retention and motorsports.
Pro-tec builds from the strength of Lear's reputation in whiplash
protection (Pro-tec Self Aligning Head Restraint), integrated restraints and
sensors, head impact protection systems, side-impact protection technologies,
and vehicle electronics. The Pro-tec logo combines a stylized headrest with
the safe-looking red and white target used to synchronize cameras during
impact testing.
Sono-tec Vehicle Acoustic Systems leverage Lear's acoustic integrator
strength and reputation, squeak and rattle control, and vibration resistance
expertise. This product line includes acoustic absorbers, squeak and rattle
control, damping systems, dash insulators, sealing systems, and exterior
acoustic systems. Lear's acoustic expertise includes extensive use of
statistical energy analysis (SEA) to predict noise, vibration and harshness
(NVH) performances of material composites before hardware is available.
"Lear's tools, technologies and products to optimize the consumer's
acoustic experience are unique in the industry," Galbreath said. "With Lear's
balanced approach we can comprehensively evaluate any component, module or
complete interior and apply the best engineering solution -- for example,
making a seat sound right to the customer, acoustically validating any
interior module, or treating a complete interior to meet aggressive cost,
weight and performance targets."
Sono-tec services include the company's expanded acoustic validation
capabilities with a smooth and rough road simulation dynamometer, hemi-
anechoic room for full vehicle testing or transmission loss studies, small
reverberation room for sound absorption testing, sound quality analysis, man-
rated ride comfort analysis, and environmental vibration durability
verification of anything from the smallest electronic component to a full
vehicle on Lear's four-post road simulator. Acoustic validation services also
include material testing and full vehicle diagnostic programs customized to an
individual automaker's specific business and technical goals.
The Sono-tec logo shows Lear's stylized, balanced approach for acoustic
optimization, with sound waves emerging from a noise source.
    Enviro-tec, Lear's Environmental Systems, demonstrates Lear's
environmental stewardship and capabilities to meet automakers' expectations
for recycled content, product life cycle analysis and production of
environmentally safe products. The product line is divided into four major
categories: environmental design process, automotive shredded residue
content, recycled products and environmentally safe products.
Lear's Enviro-tec logo features a circular arrow, demonstrating the
complete life cycle responsibility that Lear engineers into its products.
"Enviro-tec is an integral part of every Lear product. PVC-free wiring,
recyclable PET headliners, and high recycled and natural content interior trim
are just a few of the latest advances in this key area of our responsibility
to future generations," Galbreath said.
Lear Corporation, a Fortune 200 company headquartered in Southfield,
Michigan, (USA), is one of the world's largest automotive suppliers, with 1999
sales of $12.4 billion. The company's world-class products are designed,
engineered and manufactured by more than 120,000 employees in over 300
