Delphi's Forewarn Adaptive Cruise Control Earns Automotive News 'PACE' AwardTROY, Mich., March 7 Delphi Automotive Systems' Forewarn(R) Adaptive Cruise Control system was selected to receive the 2000 Automotive News PACE (Premier Automotive Supplier's Contribution to Excellence) Award during a ceremony in Detroit last night. Delphi's Forewarn Adaptive Cruise Control system (ACC) is an innovative comfort and convenience technology that takes cruise control to the next level. By using radar technology and limited control of the throttle and brakes, an ACC equipped vehicle automatically adapts the speed to keep it at a pre-set distance behind slower moving traffic. ACC was one of 19 finalists in the competition's North American category. PACE recognizes standout automotive suppliers who have excelled in adapting and reinventing their companies or products to meet constantly increasing quality standards. The program, co-sponsored by Automotive News and Ernst & Young, also recognizes suppliers meeting the technology and service needs of their customers. As a finalist for the PACE award, Delphi hosted a site visit, to evaluate product innovation and Delphi's management team. An independent panel of distinguished industry, academic, and civic leaders then determined Delphi's Adaptive Cruise Control System should receive the PACE award. Delphi's ACC is now available on the 2000 Jaguar XKR in Europe. The system measures the distance and relative speed of preceding vehicles using a microwave radar sensor located in the front of the vehicle. When the cruise control is engaged, ACC uses throttle control and limited braking to adjust the speed to maintain a set time gap between itself and the vehicle in front of it (adjustable between 1.0 and 2.0 seconds). This reduces the need to manually accelerate or decelerate with changes in traffic flow. If the lane ahead is empty, the vehicle resumes its cruising speed.
