Roadway Express Named Carrier of the Year by General Electric

AKRON, Ohio--March 7, 2000--Roadway Express, Inc. was selected "1999 Less-Than-Truckload Carrier of the Year" by General Electric (GE). The award was presented to Michael Wickham, chairman and chief executive officer for Roadway at GE's annual less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier appreciation dinner on February 22, in Plantation, FL by Ron Painter, manager of transportation sourcing for GE.
Each year the GE LTL Transportation Council selects their carrier of the year. Criteria for this award are invoice accuracy, low cargo claims ratio, competitive pricing and value-added services. In determining the award-winning carrier, key elements of the value-added services include: participation in GE's Six Sigma Quality Program; a carrier's ability to provide a full "market basket" of services, which in turn allows GE to better service their customers; the capability of providing outstanding service to destinations outside the United States; and exceptional sales support.
"Roadway is honored to receive this important award and proud to be a strategic partner of the recently named 'Most Admired Corporation' in the United States," stated Wickham. "We are committed to GE and look forward to improving our capabilities and support for GE's pursuit of excellence."
"The core of the capabilities that Roadway brings to the relationship is our information systems, which move data very well and in a very collective manner. However, more important than that is our people, who translate that data into transportation solutions to meet our customers' needs. Roadway brings the best people in the industry to that process," Wickham concluded.
Roadway's participation in GE's Six Sigma quality initiative in both its Power Systems and Lighting Divisions helped GE to improve cycle time while reducing inventory costs and improving transportation productivity. This resulted in greater satisfaction to its customers. In addition, Roadway assisted GE in reducing transit times through seamless service of shipments delivered to GE's suppliers in Mexico.
According to Painter, "The GE LTL Council is thrilled with Roadway's success in 1999 and is very appreciative of their ability to help drive customer satisfaction throughout the past year. The council is especially excited about the new opportunities and challenges that face us in 2000, and is looking forward to having Roadway's participation in developing solutions to those challenges. The GE LTL Council congratulates Roadway Express for a job well done!"
